Prime Minister of Trade, Fabric and Investment Adviser Abdul Razzaq Dawood on Friday said e-commerce giant Amazon had added Pakistan to its list of retailers.

In a tweet reporting the turn of events, he said: "This is an extraordinary accomplishment for our internet business and will open up incredible freedoms for another variety of young fellows and ladies business visionaries"

Trade adviser also shared a message from Amazon International Seller Services Deputy President Eric Broussard stating that Pakistani businessmen now have the right to trade on the platform.

"We are committed to working with the strong Pakistani business community, including small and medium retailers and helping them connect with customers around the world," he said.

Earlier in May, Dawood had said the government had partnered with Amazon since last year. “It is a great opportunity for our youth, SMEs and women entrepreneurs. An important milestone in e-commerce policy achieved through the collaboration of many people around the world, "he said.

Official sources told Dawn that Amazon's decision to register Pakistani companies was the result of Pakistani trade and machinery efforts in Washington and Los Angeles. A pilot project launched with the help of the Pakistani ambassador to Washington.

Sources said the biggest difference after being listed was that Pakistani companies would be able to create IDs using their Pakistani information, including Pakistani banks. In addition, small and medium enterprises, young entrepreneurs and women will have opportunities to connect with the global market.

Pakistan's addition to the Amazon retailer list also creates opportunities to export retailers who sell their products on the platform. The platform offers Amazon 3P model (third-party relationships - retailers sell directly to consumers in the market) that offers brand owners while the 1P model (the market acts as retailers while the product is a wholesale supplier) belongs to many manufacturers, who want to produce Amazon product products.

Some Pakistani companies are already selling on Amazon from their overseas offices but the country’s listing of retailers will increase opportunities for SMEs. The move is said to help boost more businesses and online consumers gain access to Pakistani products that can now reach all major markets through Amazon.

Pakistani products available for sale on Amazon are mainly textiles, sportswear, leather and surgical clothing. Previously Pakistani companies had to register at foreign offices or manufacture goods for other products available on Amazon.
